Without the need for web design and development expertise, you can have a successful online shop by using an ecommerce solutions package of online Shopping cart software. There is no programming on your part involved in setting up and marketing a successful online shop when you use the features and functions available in online shopping cart software. Some of the features include on-the-web administration, calculation and integration of shipping charges, real-time payments and much more.Online shopping cart software is available through many companies. Both small companies and large corporations can benefit from online shopping cart software. To help get you started, there are training manuals and videos, such as an online store builder reference. Technical support is available 24/7 for free.

For a small price, you can stream-line your online sales with help that online shopping cart software offers. It will be a huge challenge to compare all the online shopping cart software as there are so many venders of online shopping cart software on the web. Since none of them can offer the absolute perfect solution, how do you determine which is the best option for you?

What are the considerations in the evaluation of Online Shopping Cart Software Packages:

Hosting – Is it necessary to use the same host as the online shopping cart software vendor? This isn’t actually a yes or no question. If you decide to use a different host than the online shopping cart software vender, you do need to make sure that reliability and security for your business are provided by the company you choose. You can rest easy enough if you outsource you online shopping cart software solution with a company like Yahoo as they will keep your business online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To be sure you are choosing a good company, do your homework. This will help make sure you don’t spend all your time resolving issues with the shopping cart company.

Flexibility of Design – Can you integrate the look of the online shopping cart software to match your store design or do you have to design around what the software will allow? It could be advantageous to design around the online shopping cart software as their designers may have thought of some cart design ideas you didn’t. But this is not always the case. If you provide them with a template of your online store design, They might be able to incorporate the design into their program. Keep searching if they can’t do it. Also, if you are changing online shopping carts, you need to find a package that will transition smoothly from the old online shopping cart software to the new software with a full uploading of your database. This will save you a lot of time and work.

Shipping – This can be quite a challenge. You may have products that don’t need to be shipped, such as gift certificates and memberships. There might also be instances when an item is very heavy and needs special handling in shipping. Will the online shopping cart software be able to adjust for these variations? What about certain items that are on a no shipping charge special or orders that exceed a specified dollar amount?

Taxes – Some states required that taxes be paid on online purchases. And there may be times when you are selling some things that are taxable and others that are not taxable. Such things as memberships are not taxable and some states don’t tax food items or clothing. I s the online shopping cart software able to handle these exceptions? Being search engine friendly is another major concern. Are search engines able to read the entire website? Though not all online shopping cart programs were design with this in mind, search engines such as Google should be able to index the whole site, including the shopping cart. You will lose out quite a bit on traffic coming from search engines if the big search engine spiders can’t read your site or if they can, find it isn’t completely search engine optimized.

Reporting – What type of information do you want the online shopping cart software to make available to you? Do you need to know what you best selling items are? What your overall sales are? Would you like to have your traffic info available? There are a lot of options on what kind of data can be provided for you and some of the online shopping carts are better than others in giving the data you want in a good cohesive format.

Back end functionality – Can you add new products or categories with ease? If a product of out of stock, can you turn off the order function for that product? Are you able to tie the shopping cart to an inventory system? What about images, will they be easy to load or be difficult and complicated? Is it necessary to upload a different image for thumbnails and enlarged views? If it appears that setting up and maintaining your shopping cart is going to be a major ongoing task, find a different shopping cart.

Cross selling – Can you list similar or related items on sale right within the cart to take advantage of cross selling? Can you offer accessories for items, such as headphones for a new personal CD player? Though it is a great way to get customers to add to their shopping carts, only a few programs offer cross selling as an option.

Merchant Account Flexibility – If you already have an established online business, you more than likely have a merchant account for processing credit card payments. Will you be able to use your current merchant account with the online shopping cart software you are considering? In the event you have to use it, is the merchant account associated with the shopping cart software under consideration acceptable? How are charge-backs handled? What about the credits cards they will take, are they the same as the ones your offline account takes? Will the shopping cart merchant account be easy for your customers to use? Will your customers need to register with a 3rd party program, such as Paypal, before they can make purchases? Be wary of anything that could have a negative affect on your website’s sales rates.

Additional Features – After you have your cart up and running, you will very likely think of features that could potentially raise your sales. Is flexibility to add other features offered by the cart you are considering? Does the cart offer gift registries or wish lists? Can promotional codes or online coupons be used so customers can get a discount for being referred or referring others. Can an affiliate program be incorporated into the shopping cart. Is a wholesale login offered in the cart program?

To summarize, to choose the right online shopping cart software, a lot of questions need to be answered. It is hoped that the above queries will get you on the right road when you are considering shopping cart software solutions for your ebusiness. Obviously, each ebusiness has its own needs to take into account when considering shopping cart software solutions, so the questions above should assist you in finding the right solution for your web business.

Galway city is renowned the world over as a vibrant, warm and multicultural city. It’s a popular destination for Christmas shopping in Ireland, as it has everything – lively pubs, gourmet restaurants, plenty of accommodation, a weekly market, lots of shopping arcades and a terrific range of shops, so you’ll have no bother finding those Christmas presents and last minute stocking fillers!Galway city is especially welcoming over Christmas. It’s located beside the sea surrounded by some of Ireland’s most spectacular landscape, which helps to create the perfect scene.

When it comes to Christmas shopping, Galway has just as much to offer, as any other large city in Ireland.

Shopping in Galway is a pleasant experience as much of the city center is pedestrianised and you’ll stumble upon quirky little shops, small boutiques and beautiful craft shops as you roam around its cobbled streets. Of course, you’ll find all your usual high street stores and labels too.

When you visit Galway on your shopping break, be sure to visit the local market. It’s normally open on a Saturday and Sunday all year round, but is usually open for about 10 days prior to Christmas and a visit here will definitely put you in the festive mood. Don’t miss the opportunity to mingle with the locals as they gather to chitchat as well as do their shopping. This market has been taking place for centuries and is located next to St. Nicholas Church at the bottom of Shop Street. It’s best known for its exclusive arts, crafts and mouthwatering foods prepared while you wait. Handmade chocolates, delicious crepes and Japanese Sushi are just some of the foods you’ll find here.

Many of the shops in Galway city are situated on streets in the key shopping area in the centre of the city, while the shopping centres tend to be on the outskirts of the city.

Eyre Square Shopping Centre

Eyre Square Shopping Centre (found in Eyre Square!) has up to 100 shops offering everything from fashion, gifts, jewellery, books, sport, department stores and restaurants.

The shops pull out all the stops at Christmas with elaborate window and shop displays.

(Even if you don’t buy anything – take a stroll through this shopping center and see the remains of the old city walls, which have been incorporated into the building!)

Shop Street – Galway City

Don’t pass up the opportunity to saunter down the bustling Shop Street where some of the best shops are to be found. The street is a bit touristy so if you’re looking for craft shops, hand made jewellery and art shops, then this is the place to go.

Latin Quarter

This street is known as High Street and the quaint cobblestoned street is filled with fascinating exclusive shops. You will find original and once off gifts here.

The Corrib Shopping Centre

There are lots of shopping centres in Galway. The Corrib Shopping Centre is not very big but is ideally located and within walking distance of Eyre Square. It has a good range of shops including Roches Stores – a large department store with everything under the one roof!

The Galway Shopping Centre

Situated on the Headford Road is the Galway Shopping Centre which has well over 100 shops including Penny’s – a big hit for its trendy clothes at bargain prices. A car is recommended especially if you plan on doing lots of Christmas shopping so it’s good to know there’s loads of parking. If you have the kids in tow, then there’s plenty to keep them occupied with the onsite Leisure Dome which incorporated a bowling alley, laser games, a play area and lots more.

Terryland Retail Park

Another shopping centre located on the Headford Road and catering for people looking for specialist shops and unique gifts.

Galway is such a fantastic city to visit and when you arrive here on your pre Christmas shopping break you’ll know what we mean. It’s a paradise of lively pubs, shops, and restaurants, with friendly faces and a warm atmosphere. And when you’re finished your Christmas shopping in Galway city, you can explore top attractions like Connemara, the Aran Islands and the Cliffs of Moher.

In our modern day and age, discount stores can be seen on almost every street. In fact, a new Wal-Mart was just built in my neighborhood. Since we already have Wal-Mart and K-Mart in my neighborhood, we certainly didn’t need any new bargain stores.People around the neighborhood also flock to a shopping mall near my house. Of course, they are paying more money and hunting for certain brand names at the shopping mall. However, I’ve noticed more sales at the mall since the discount stores have begun to take over.

Since I like the idea of saving money, I’ve always been a fan of discount stores. I feel happy whenever I shop at Target for half of the cost of visiting the malls. Anyway, both the K-Mart and Wal-Mart discount stores in my town have added groceries to their stores making life even more convenient for many customers.

To be honest, I didn’t like that idea at first. However, I warmed up to the idea after I realized just how much of a convenience it was. Life becomes a bit less expensive when I do all of my shopping at one store because of the high price of gas these days.

Do you know that discount stores are more popular in America than anyplace else in the world? Maybe that means that we’re a cheap country that is full of bargain hunters. Of course, it may also mean that we all are smarter. After all, nobody wants to spend more money than they have to.

I think that those who shop at discount stores are simply more price-conscious than other shoppers. I don’t want to spend $50 more for something just because it happens to be a particular brand name. After all, I can get the same item for less money, minus the expensive label at a discount store.

Target is my favorite discount store because it has more of a selection and more trendy fashions that the competitors. I’m proud of the amount of money I have been able to save from getting the majority of my pre-schoolers clothing at bargain stores.

I think that half of the items in my house have been purchased at discount stores. Most of the Christmas presents I give to my friends and family also come from bargain stores. I get my greeting cards from those stores because of the large selections and discounted prices they offer. I love the fact that I have so many bargain stores to choose from, even if I’m not thrilled with the disorganized traffic patterns in my town.

It appears as though dollar stores as well as other discount stores are becoming popular retailers in many cities. Will these low cost retailers actually provide you with a bargain or will they simply sell poor quality products? Many people feel, there are plenty of bargains found in these stores when you search for the right products.I give a lot of greeting cards to friends and family, however they will cost $4.00 or more each at nearly all retailers. I can find many nice cards at discount stores for around 50 cents each. They’re still humorous, charming or sentimental and I don’t feel like I needed to settle for less than what I wanted to say.

Disposable products for parties can be a great deal at discount stores. The cost of napkins, paper plates, glasses, silverware, invitations, and so on, could really add up quickly. Wrapping paper and gift bags can be another area of party items that can be purchased for a great price at these discount stores.

I wouldn’t advise going into discount shops and purchasing presents for your family or friends, however there really are some excellent items out there. Many people take advantage of buying picture frames from discount retailers because they appear just as good. However, I would feel kind of funny getting picture frames from these shops as presents. For instance I bought a great set of frames from a discount warehouse recently. They could be mistaken for glass and make for a good-looking display on my dresser. But if you pick them up you can quickly observe they are manufactured from thin plastic material.

Nearly all discount stores have lots of toys for kids, but don’t forget – kids can be very hard on toys. They will be really disappointed if the head pops off your doll or the wheels fall off of their car or truck. I wouldn’t advise purchasing these toys from a discount shop because the quality just isn’t there.

But there are plenty of entertaining children’s toys and games you can get from a discount store such as marbles, sidewalk chalk, as well as coloring books. These all make terrific goodies for stocking stuffers and even traveling to make the trip go by quicker. I love to find soap bubbles for when we stop at a rest area just as a bonus for them to treat one another with care while we will be on an extended trip. Very simple, but it works beautifully every time!

In addition, there are plenty of products at discount stores you could use to spruce up your home. I can’t pay $35.00 to buy a shower curtain! It simply isn’t going to happen. I always buy them at a dollar store for only 1 or 2 dollars. They last a long time and they have worked out just fine. I have no problem whatsoever when the time comes to replace it. Also, I’ve found great soap dishes as well as wall hangings for my bathroom at discount stores.

Office supplies are something many of us use on a regular basis. You can purchase them for an excellent price at discount retailers. Notebooks, paper, pens, glue, rulers, scissors, calculators, along with envelopes will all be found for a great price. I’ve never had any problems with the quality of these products. They’re quite comparable to those I purchase at different retail stores for much more money.

I believe when it comes to locating bargains at discount stores there are many to be discovered. It is important you don’t have too high of expectations when it comes to the quality of the products. But in almost all of the cases as to the different products I have described, the quality doesn’t need to be outstanding. They will work just fine without costing you a lot. This makes party planning quite enjoyable if you know you’ve got the budget to cover everything. If you never browse through discount stores you’re really missing out on some terrific bargains!

For example, if you're like many people there are a number of times throughout the year that you send a card to a loved one or friend.

In today’s economy various different versions and types of discount stores are popping up in just about every city and town across the country. With so many different discount retail stores in the marketplace, can these shops really offer you some decent bargains, or are they just selling poor quality at a lower price? When it comes to finding those great bargains, one thing seems to hold true no matter where you might be shopping and that is you just need to exercise some patience and persistence.

For example, if you’re like many people there are a number of times throughout the year that you send a card to a loved one or friend. With just a bit of looking you can quite readily find boxes of discounted cards that might save you as much as two to three dollars per card over the price at a regular retail outlet. And these cards are still just as funny, romantic, or caring as those more expensive ones.

Discount stores are a wealth of deals when your looking for disposable paper or party items. Why pay retail prices for paper decorations, paper plates, and throw away cups and napkins and such. Buying these items at a retail store will quickly eat up all your party budget. Speaking of paper products, don’t forget wrapping paper and gift bags as well. Discount stores will usually have a great stock and selection of these types items.

Of course, discount store quality doesn’t fit the bill for all your gift buying needs and you’ll have to be the judge for that, but even if you don’t get the primary gifts at the discount store, you can still find plenty of accessory and fun little items to use as fun add on gifts.

Kids gifts are plentiful at discount stores and you can really stock up on fun gifts for kids. For the most part, the discount store gifts would be used more for stocking stuffer types of gifts for the kids and probably not the primary gift, but these stores are great for rounding out the other gifts you buy for your kids… and they are very easy on your budget… and kids get even more prizes to open!

There are also plenty of items at the discount stores that you can use to accessorize your home. Sure these items aren’t the high quality of most retail stores, but for items that you are going to use on a shelf or the tops of your cabinets, they look great from a distance and fit the bill perfectly. And when it comes time to replace the items you aren’t busting your budget either!

Office supplies and school supplies are also abundant at discount stores. You can save a lot of money on items such as pencils, pens, notebooks, etc. Don’t just automatically go to the retail stores for these types of items… it’s an expensive habit especially when, for these types of items, the quality is near the same.

There are a variety of quality bargains that you can find if you just take the time to occasionally stop by your local discount store. Just remember it is all about your expectations when you are perusing the shelves… if high quality and durability is a priority for the item you are looking for then the discount stores don’t fit the bill, but for the right items you can save a bundle.

If you aren’t at least checking out the discount stores for many of your every day usable items then you’re probably spending too much. If nothing else, stop by and do some price comparing and you’ll find that somewhere in that store there is money to be saved.

Internet shopping is shaping up. However today, internet shopping is a really significant part of the retail sector. Internet shopping is the new shopping experience of the future. Of course the other major hurdle for internet shopping is shipping charges, sometimes they are to expensive. The growth rate for Internet shopping is growing. Secure internet shopping is secure using encryption and ssl techniques. Internet shopping is easier, safer, and more convenient than at any point in its history. Internet shopping is fast becoming one of the easiest ways to buy almost anything you want. Internet shopping is a way of shopping that allows shopping for required products without going to the store physically. The Internet is great because people are able to shop 24 hours a day without having to leave their home or work.

The Internet is changing the wholesale/retail landscape daily. In today’s market the shopping sector is taking about a tenth of all retail shopping sales in the US, and the percentage in other countries is not as high. One reason we use the internet is to buy merchandise at a discount to retail.

One of the biggest benefits of shopping online is the convenience and access to more products and information 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Note that blocking all cookies prevents some online services from working, so you must allow cookies on your browser. Nearly 40 percent of remote workers said they use their work computers for Internet shopping. Be a smart shopper and use common sense when online shopping and just go ahead and enjoy your Internet shopping experience today. The more people that shop online, the bigger their expectations. The supermarket industry now services many customers through online food shopping over the Internet. We understand that shopping online can feel risky and uncertain.

The following tips will help ensure a safe Internet shopping. If you follow this advice on safe Internet shopping, this should not be a problem. All purchases are made through safe and secure servers. It’s safe to say SSL is extremely sophisticated software and safe. Always know where your cards are and keep them in a safe place.

The phenomenal success of online retailers such as Amazon and Expedia is proof that internet shopping is practiced – and trusted – by millions. Of course the other major hurdle for internet shopping is shipping charges, sometimes shipping is much more than the product. Whether we love it or hate it, Internet shopping is convenient, provides a wide choice and competitive prices. Internet shopping is a big time-saver. As mentioned above, Internet shopping is very much like conventional in-home shopping from catalogs or mail orders. Despite the toughening competition, Internet shopping is likely to continue to grow.

Passing the Left Bank, a brasserie on Santana Row in San Jose, it’s easy to forget you’re not in Paris. The street scene is a freshly concocted recreation of a French boulevard, or… is it an Italian plaza? A few steps further and you’ve entered Sino, artistic chef Chris Yeo’s hip interpretation of a metropolitan Asian bistro with dim sum carts swirling about richly minimalist ruby, gold and bronze booths. No, you’ve been transported to Beijing’s poshest restaurant… or have you? Meanwhile, at El Jardin in Santana Row park, a Latin jazz trio plays, reminiscent of an evening in Buenos Aires… or not.

There are so many sensory experiences along San Jose’s themed shopping and dining district called Santana Row, that it’s understandable why so many first-time visitors might become confused about where they are. In creating Santana Row, some of the world’s best urban experiences were fused, generating a new place that defies categorization. More than a shopping district, it is a community with parks, townhouses and a hotel. Facades of the five-story buildings along the boulevard hint stylistically that Santana Row evolved over the past century. A pseudo art deco frieze atop one of the false fronts heroically declares “DeForest” hinting that some industrial plant once occupied the building in the 1930s. The consistent height of the buildings along its 1500-foot “Main Street” shocks one’s senses after arriving from sprawling Silicon Valley where building height seems constrained only by purpose. Suddenly, you’ve entered an urban canyon as is common in European cities.

Santana Row’s developer set out to redefine the urban neighborhood, by salvaging its best characteristics and filling its street-level spaces with chic shops and gathering spots that would attract upscale tenants and residents. The strategy worked. Santana Row is home to such famous names in fashion as Gucci, Tommy Bahama, Ann Taylor, Burberry and Brooks Brothers. Discriminating diners are attracted to such one-of-a-kind restaurants as Tanglewood where inventive forms of “comfort food” are served in what General Manager Andy O’Day calls “Spirited American Cuisine.” Entrees include such unusual items as “Coca-Cola Braised Pork Belly” or “Buttermilk Fried Wolfe Quail” served with honey-buttered mini biscuits, American culinary legend James Beard’s favorite biscuit.

Just like Tanglewood’s menu, everything about Santana Row is completely new and yet, also, remembered vaguely. We’ve been here before… somewhere in our imagination. That sense of familiarity amidst the surreal is the result of a wholly California invention… the theme park. Santana Row is an adult evolution of the theme park, where an idealized, proverbial environment is created for our enjoyment. It stands to reason that the state where the theme park was invented (Disneyland, 1955) would also extend its affection for whimsy to shopping. Throughout the golden state, shopping is more than what is inside the store. It’s the experience that goes with it.

If San Diego was the birthplace of California, then Old Town San Diego – the city’s historic pueblo dating from 1769 – is the birthplace of themed shopping. Here in 1968, California established a state historic park to preserve its first downtown. Today, 27 early-1800s homes, a one-room school house, the first church in San Diego and government buildings are preserved. Scattered among the historic buildings once-derelict motels and shops have since been transformed into Mission-revival adobes containing 106 shops and 12 art galleries that bring life to the museum-like quiet of the state park by selling colorful south of the border crafts, clothing and treasures. On visiting Old Town, a government official from Mexico was overheard saying to another of his colleagues, “The Americans are even doing Mexico better than us.” Patio restaurants amidst the themed shops resonate with the happy sounds of Mariachi musicians as they entertain diners and stroll beneath columned arbors draped with magenta bougainvillea.

Beyond the limed walls and red tile roofs of Old Town, the maritime history of San Diego (home to the U.S. Navy, America’s tuna fleet, cruise ships and numerous yacht clubs) is celebrated at Seaport Village. A contrast of silvery-black weathered buildings and colorfully painted salt box structures provide a nautical flair along the waterfront. Lushly landscaped paths wind past curio shops and eateries and along San Diego Bay where benches provide good spots to watch passing sailboats and warships.

Further up the California coast in Orange County’s Newport Beach, coastal life is the theme of Fashion Island, an enclave of Mediterranean style with splashing fountains and a signature koi pond. The first impression one has on entering Gary’s Island – one of three local Gary’s stores in the mall – is the brilliance of the apparel’s tropical colors: turquoise and yellow, pink, and lime. While, at Lola Rouge Kids, designer fashionistas aged 6 to 16 go “gahgah” over its trend-setting party wear. Clearly, you’re not in London any more. Though, if you seek more conservative rags to don, explore Orange County’s only Bloomingdale’s or Neiman Marcus among Fashion Island’s 200 specialty stores.

The granddaddy of California’s destination shopping centers is Costa Mesa’s South Coast Plaza. Although sleek South Coast Plaza does not fit categorization as themed shopping, because it is such a favorite of travelers (24 million shoppers a year) it deserves a spot on any review of what makes California shopping special. South Coast Plaza’s distinction is its unusual concentration of the most glamorous names in design: Tiffany & Co., Valentino, CHANEL, St. John, Hermes, Dior, Hugo Boss, Louis Vuitton and Giorgio Armani to name a few (there just isn’t space here to name them all). More than a shopping center, South Coast Plaza’s 280 stores elevate shopping to the level of performance with their showmanship and the center’s five valet parking stations and five concierge desks that will arrange dinner reservations or theater tickets, if you can bear to stop perusing the stores.

If not, performance shopping is found at two of the biggest names in entertainment, Disney and Universal Pictures. Set between Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure theme parks, the shops and restaurants at Downtown Disney in Anaheim are all about having fun, whether buying sports merchandise at the ESPN Zone, listening to jazz as you dine at House of Blues, purchasing Disney memories at World of Disney, being amazed at the Lego Imagination Center or creating a new persona at Sephora. Universal City Walk at the entrance to Universal Studios Hollywood in Los Angeles claims 65 cool things to do, from finding native American arts and crafts at Adobe Road, to dressing like a “hog” at the Harley Davidson store, to finding Southern California skateboard fashions at Skechers, to unearthing rare video games at EB Games, or to being amused by the rock and roll memorabilia as you chow down on a burger at the Hard rock Café Hollywood.

There’s a local saying that goes, “nobody walks in L.A.,” though along Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade, it seems everyone in L.A. County is. This is one of the places to see Hollywood celebrities out and about, particularly midweek when it’s less crowded. Among those who have been seen on the three-block-long Promenade include Brad Pitt, Cher, Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda, Jack Nicholson, Charlise Theron, Jennifer Aniston, Whoopi Goldberg… by now you’ve figured out all area celebrities eventually stop here to watch a film at any of several multi-screen motion picture complexes, to shop at Fred Segal or buy an Austrian ice cream at Charley Tremmel’s.

If star watching is your bag, look for them (again, midweek) at the Beverly Center in L.A. (between Beverly Hills and Hollywood) or in Palm Springs along Palm Canyon Boulevard. The ultimate star-watching location is, however, Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive (pronounced Roh-DAY-oh). This posh street of high-end stores was the set for Julia Robert’s character’s shopping spree in the movie Pretty Woman. The shopping area is much more compact than the impression it made on the big screen. Allow an hour to walk its three blocks and a budget of $10,000 if you actually plan to buy something at Bijan (431 N. Rodeo Drive) reputed to be the world’s most expensive store. Though, the window shopping and people watching are free.

If there is an opposite of stuffy and pricey Rodeo Drive it must be historic Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles. This is where the Pueblo de Los Angeles began and this mercado still exudes the liveliness of a Mexican village. Street vendors sell Mexican jumping beans, restaurants serve authentic traditional recipes and vibrant Mexican art and crafts are displayed under red tile and canvas awnings along its cobbled streets.

The sights and textures of Olvera Street’s glimpse of old Mexico are quite a contrast from the Assyrian architecture of the Citadel Outlets south of downtown L.A. on Interstate 5. This outlet center was once the headquarters of the Samson Tire & Rubber Co. and to reflect a Samson and Delilah theme was fashioned after a 7th-century B.C. Assyrian palace and is adorned with heraldic griffins and bas-reliefs of Babylonian princes in the style of ancient Samaria, Akkadia and Babylonia. Today, the winged guardians at its entrance guard the retail royalty of: Calvin Klien, Tommy Hilfiger and the United Colors of Benetton, among the center’s many outlet stores.

If the Citadel is Sumaria, then Carmel by the Sea must be the place Californian Thomas Kinkade got his inspiration to paint cottages and gardens. This village set beside a picture-perfect bay on the Monterey Peninsula has, since its earliest days, sought to protect its beauty, charm and environment. After the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 displaced artists, poets, musicians and writers (Jack London among them), they gathered here and influenced the town’s bohemian style. Today, this village of Tudor-styled cottages and 200-plus shops is the epitome of “quaint,” a village of homes without street numbers where art galleries are more prevalent than petrol stations.

Columbia State Historic Park near Sonora, in the Gold Country, is another place that rejects the present. There, the 1850s live always. Wells Fargo stage coaches roll along its dusty streets, miners retell their tall tales, shops are filled with goods reminiscent of the California gold rush, and the sounds of laughter, card games and honky-tonk pianos are heard from inside saloons along its wooden sidewalks. A similar atmosphere is found in Old Sacramento, the original jumping off spot for the California gold rush in 1849. A blend of tourist shops and those serving the local populace keep travelers and residents alike returning to Old Sacramento, as happened from 1848 to the early 1870s, when the California Gold Rush eventually slowed.

One themed California shopping area that has never slowed down is San Francisco’s famous Chinatown. Since its earliest days, Chinatown has been a window to the Far East, importing exotic goods and spices to scent San Francisco streets with commerce and character. The Chinese immigrants who founded Chinatown didn’t know they were building a themed shopping area. They recreated what was familiar to them. The resulting pagoda-marked district is as close a resemblance of China as you’ll find outside the Orient. Street signs read in both Chinese and English characters, buildings have the stacked, up-swung roofs of royal palaces, smoked ducks hang in shop windows, small markets sell produce and fresh fish along the street, Chinese is spoken in all the shops, and carts laden with goods crowd sidewalks waiting to be shipped across the country. None of this was done to evoke character; it is real life in a fantasy place.

Just as on Santana Row, it’s easy to forget that you’re in California when exploring the fascinating shops of San Francisco’s Chinatown. As, California’s themed shopping areas have the common ability to entertain as you shop California.

Out of town shopping malls may well have started the decline of the traditional British high street over the last few years, and it’s easy to see why. However whilst London doesn’t offer any of these – it doesn’t need to!London literally has it all. From market stalls to the world’s biggest department stores, from inexpensive bric-a-brac to extortionately priced cutting edge fashion from the world’s top designers, everyone is catered for by London’s many and varied shopping areas. As convenient as malls are, they don’t even scratch the surface of what London is able to offer the shopper in terms of diversity and wherever you are in the city, it’s all just a short tube or bus ride away. With the chance of seeing some of the world’s most famous landmarks as well, the London shopping experience cannot be beaten.

Oxford Street

Britain’s busiest high street and London’s best known shopping area is chock-a-block full of the nation’s most popular shops – over 300 in fact. Many of the biggest high street names have their flagship stores here and the street also boasts the oldest record shop in the world (HMV at number 363). Also home to the world famous Selfridges department store, Oxford Street is 1 ½ miles of shopping utopia for those that don’t mind the experience being a little on the hectic side.

Nearest Tubes: Marble Arch, Bond Street, Oxford Circus, Tottenham Court Road

Knightsbridge

Knightsbridge is the home of classy fashion boutiques and quality department stores – the jewels in the crown being the absolutely fabulous Harvey Nicholls and the world’s most famous corner shop, Harrods. Big name fashion designers can be found in Sloane Street and equally chic but smaller outlets at Beauchamp Place.

Nearest Tube: Knightsbridge

Kensington High Street

Kensington offers a bit of everything to those shopping in London. It features all of the well known chain stores, plenty of one-offs, department stores (the main one being Barker’s), an array of antique shops (in nearby Kensington Church Street) and numerous restaurants. It’s less busy than the West End and certainly a touch classier.

Nearest Tube: High Street Kensington

Regent Street

Regent Street, running the ¾ of a mile between Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus, certainly provides the most visually elegant shopping experience in London as all the shops conform to the same ornate architectural style. It features department stores, fashion boutiques, restaurants and well known high street names and is also home to the world’s best known toy store, Hamley’s.

Nearest Tubes: Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus

Bond Street

If you’re looking for a London shopping experience with a touch of class – and you don’t mind paying for it – then Bond Street is for you. Full of the biggest designer names including Armani, Calvin Klein, Gucci, Cartier and Tiffany & Co, the street boasts more suppliers to the royal family than anywhere else in London. A world away from the ‘every man for themselves’ experience of Oxford Street, many stores have their own doormen. The street is also home to the world famous Sotheby’s auction house.

Nearest Tube: Bond Street

Tottenham Court Road

If you’re shopping in London for electrical items or home furnishings then Tottenham Court Road is well worth a visit. The backstreets of the area offer an array of interesting pubs and specialist shops and nearby Charlotte Street features a wide variety of restaurants.

Nearest Tubes: Tottenham Court Road, Goodge Street, Warren Street

Soho & Chinatown

Soho has cleaned up its act over the years and no longer has the seedy reputation it was once known for. If it’s sex shops you’re looking for in London, you’ll still be well catered for but its reputation nowadays is built just as much on the many cafes, bars and restaurants, all of which make the area an extremely popular attraction 24 hours a day. It’s an incredibly diverse area racially and culturally, has a thriving gay community and has also become the media capital over recent years. Soho is busy and untidy but well worth the experience.

Nearest Tubes: Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square

Carnaby Street

London’s fashion Mecca of the swinging 60s has today become almost as famous for souvenir shops cashing in on tourists who are drawn to the street by its iconic name, however it is now starting to regain something of a cutting edge reputation, particularly at the southern end of the street. Newburgh Street (which runs across Carnaby Street) features the shops of a number of top designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier and John Richmond and nearby Kingly Court has 3 floors of concept shops set around an open courtyard offering items not sold anywhere else in London.

Nearest Tube: Oxford Circus

King’s Road

The road gained a reputation for cutting edge fashion back in the 1960s and 70s which perhaps it doesn’t quite have nowadays, however it still features many independent clothes and shoe shops. There are also a number of contemporary furnishing stores and a huge array of bars and restaurants. The large Peter Jones department store is at the Sloane Square end of the road and opposite is the new Duke Of York shopping precinct. The road has always had something of a glamorous reputation and as well as providing a great London shopping experience, is also a top place to go celeb spotting.

Nearest Tube: Sloane Square

Fulham Road

The Fulham Road runs parallel to the King’s Road and offers an altogether more laid back London shopping experience. If it’s antiques you’re after or specialist interior furnishings then you’ll be more than ably catered for here.

Nearest Tube: South Kensington

Portobello Road

Notting Hill has become quite a fashionable area of late but long before the film and even the annual carnival – in fact ever since the 18th century – the Portobello Road market has drawn large numbers of visitors. Known predominantly for its antiques, bric-a-brac and collectables, there’s also shops and stalls selling everything from fruit and veg to trendy clothing. And if all that shopping makes you thirsty, there’s no shortage of pubs for you to choose from.

Nearest Tube: Ladbroke Grove

Islington

Another area of London that has become fashionable in recent years, Islington has a bit of everything to cater for both its inhabitants and visitors. Upper Street is the area’s ‘high street’ and features all of the familiar chain stores as well as lots of bars and restaurants. Chapel Market offers all of the usual market fare such as fruit and veg, clothes and homeware whilst Camden Passage has some nice antiques shops. Islington is not the obvious London shopping destination, but well worth a look.

Camden Town

If you’re after a more bohemian London shopping experience than that offered by Knightsbridge or Bond Street, then get yourself up to Camden. One of the city’s coolest areas has a seemingly endless array of shops and stalls selling such items as clothing (new, second hand and retro), customised Doc Martins and trainers, jewellery, bootleg CDs and DVDs and craft ware. Open daily (and very busy at weekends), it’s a multi cultural experience with some great little food outlets dotted all over.

Covent Garden

Formerly a fruit and vegetable market, ‘The Garden’ is now a constant and varied hive of activity. It has a hugely diverse selection of shops, eateries, bars, a market selling art, crafts, antiques and souvenirs, historic buildings, theatres, the Royal Opera House and fantastic free entertainment provided by street entertainers and musicians. If you can’t find something to capture your interest at Covent Garden then there really is no hope.

Are you a person who likes to be the center of attention … or do you prefer to deal with people on a one-to-one basis? Are you at your best when lots of people are swirling around you … or do you prefer calmer surroundings? Are you open to working in an unstructured environment … or is the more traditional set-up of walls and a door your preference?Whether you choose to market your items from a Kiosk or a Gift Shop, the basics of each plan are similar. First we’ll concentrate on Kiosks, especially the pushcart type wagons that are so popular in malls and other high traffic areas, whether indoors or outdoors. Then we’ll add in Gift Shop information.

KIOSKS

WHERE DO I START?

You’ve seen the charming wagons in the mall. They’re filled with eye-catching items and surrounded by great foot-traffic and you thought they might be a great way to sell your products. You’re right, they can be. Of course, as with any sales plan, it’s the time and energy you put into it that determines your success.

PLAN A LOCATION

After you’ve made the decision to lease one of these attractive carts, the first step in your plan is to decide which mall you want to be in. Malls may vary widely as to foot traffic, leasing costs, and type of merchandise allowed. Remember, due to the lack of storage space, you will be constantly restocking your cart and merchandise will have to be carried in on a regular basis, so you may want to lease one nearby, to reduce travel time.

CONTACT THE CART CONCESSION MANAGEMENT

Every mall has a Management Office that handles cart leasing. After you have decided which malls you are considering, a letter of introduction and purpose sent to the office is a good next step.

OBTAIN A BUSINESS LICENSE

Whichever mall or space you settle on, you’ll need a business license and a resale number. Business licenses are issued by the city in which you are doing, business. A fee is charged and the license is generally valid for one year. Resale permits are required for all business owners and are free. Check with your City Hall for more information.

MERCHANDISE AND VISUAL CONCEPTS

After having seen samples of your merchandise, most associations will want to talk with you about the visual concept you have of your planned display. This is to insure that the quality of goods allowed on their carts and how it is displayed is kept at a certain level and the image is consistent with other carts in the mall.

Keep in mind that your merchandise selection for this type of operation will consist of smaller items such as Patchwork pieces, birdhouses, glass ornaments and the like, since storage area in the cart is minimal. With many kiosks, everything that does not fit inside a closed and secured cart must be stored elsewhere or removed every evening at close of day.

Note: Most malls offer some storage area but a fee is charged for the space and the fee varies from mall to mall.

ADVERTISING

Generally, malls do not allow you to advertise with flyers inside or directly outside the mall, therefore any advertising you do will need to be done by other methods. If you choose to advertise, decide on how and where you plan to do so and don’t forget to add this cost into your budget.

FEES

The fee structure for cart leasing also varies from mall to mall, however, there are several fees that are common for cart leasing.

1. Base Fee: This is the basic monthly fee charged for leasing the cart.

2. Percentage Fee: In addition to the basic monthly fee, a percentage of your weekly sales will also be charged. Example: $700 per month base fee plus 12% of your weekly gross over $1500.

Note: These numbers are only examples. Fees vary widely based on area and location in the mall itself. Some malls offer a lesser base fee for leases guaranteed for over a certain number of months.

3. Security Deposit: This is usually a refundable deposit.

4. CAM (Common Area Maintenance) Fee: A small fee is charged each month that goes toward the mall’s maintenance of the area around the carts.

ADDITIONAL FEES

In addition to the basic and percentage fees, security deposit and monthly CAM fee, there may or may not be additional fees. These fees are at the discretion of the mall association. They may include:

1. A small, one-time, signage fee that covers the making and installing of a sign announcing your business name. This is charged in order to keep all signage uniform.

Note: In some instances, you will only be allowed to display certain signs, (such as “SALE”, “We Accept Major Credit Cards,” and “Employment Opportunities Available,”) and they must be pre-printed. Most malls discourage hand-lettered signs.

2. A nominal, monthly, marketing fee to cover advertising.

3. A small, monthly fee for regular cart cleaning by mall maintenance.

INSURANCE

It is generally required that the lessee (you) will provide both general liability and property damage insurance. The mall will stipulate the amount and type of insurance required. Premiums for these forms of insurance will vary according to area. Check with your local insurance agents for information and rate quotes.

CASH REGISTER

You will be expected to supply your own cash register. A secure “cash wrap” area is built into most carts in which the register is stored and secured by locks, which you will provide.

Note: Carts vary, however, each one is designed for security during off-hours and can be closed and secured, usually by locks, which you provide.

TELEPHONES AND ELECTRIC HOOK-UPS

Electrical hook-ups are generally provided for lighting and cash register. Telephone service, however, is often not available. Therefore, if you wish to accept credit cards it is suggested that you use a cellular phone hook-up or a radio transmitted device (credit card machine) for these transactions.

INDIVIDUAL RULES AND REGULATIONS

Each mall will have their own rules and regulations and these will vary. Applicable rules will be spelled out on your contract and/or on a separate sheet provided by the management. Some of these may be:

1. OPENING AND CLOSING POLICY. Most every mall requires your cart to be open prior to the opening of the mall and close after the mall has closed. A cart not open during mall hours will usually receive a warning followed by a small fine after a second fault.

2. DRESS CODE: Generally each mall has a dress code, which you will need to adhere to in order to present a professional look.

3. NEATNESS: It will be expected that you will keep your cart and stock neat and tidy in addition to the monthly cleaning the cart receives from the mall staff.

4. SEATING, EATING, DRINKING, READING AND OTHER NECESSITIES: In order to present a professional front, many malls do not allow eating, drinking, reading, or listening to personal tape or cd players while doing business. One chair is usually provided (which will have to be secured at night) for the cart operator.

Often, since the cart may be operated by only one person at a time and cannot be dosed during mall hours, it becomes necessary to eat or drink on site. In this instance most malls often bend the rules and allow the cart operator to do so if it is done discreetly and in a short amount of time.

When restroom breaks become necessary it is usually a custom for an employee at a nearby cart to watch your area for a short time.

5. RESTOCKING AND TRASH DISPOSAL: Restocking should be done during hours when the mall is closed and all trash and boxes must be disposed of in marked areas before the mall is opened.

GIFT SHOPS

The basics of opening and running a gift shop are very similar to those of a kiosk with a few important exceptions.

There are a number of factors to consider after you decide you want to open a gift shop of your own. A gift shop is a significant personal and financial commitment— and the amount time and energy you put into your shop will be a big determining factor in your success. It is wise to have some marketing and sales experience under your belt before you take this big step.

TIP: Many successful gift shop owners started out by selling at swap meets!

LOCATION

The first thing that usually comes to mind when choosing a location is to find one with the largest volume of customers and foot traffic. However, you must keep in mind that a high volume of foot traffic does not necessarily mean a high volume of foot traffic “in your store.”

If you choose a location in a strip mall near a large department store because the parking lot is always full, you’ll might find that the majority of people in those cars are coming to that mall to go specifically to that large store, back to their car, and home again. Yes, you want foot traffic, but you don’t want that traffic to walk past your shop … you want it to come inside.

After selecting several possible locations for your shop, do your homework by spending some time in each area. Watch the shopping patterns of the people. Talk to the other storeowners. Get a feel for what you might look forward to in the future. Malls are also viable spaces for a gift shop but check out the location of the shop inside the mall. There are certain areas in malls that offer a great deal less traffic. These are usually less expensive, but make sure you weigh the rent reduction against the traffic flow.

SQUARE FOOTAGE AND DISPLAY ITEMS

The square footage you will need depends upon what you intend to sell and what quantities you want to display and keep on hand in your storage area. Determine the space you need by visiting other gift shops. Ask their area measurements. Look at the display furniture and cases they are using. Calculate the amount of stock you would need to fill an area of that size.

BUSINESS LICENSE

As with Kiosks, you will need a business license and a resale number. Again, these are issued by the city in which you are doing business, a fee is charged, and the license is usually valid for one year. Resale permits are required and are free. Check with your City Hall for more information on both these items.

If you plan on opening your store in a regular retail area, you’ll want to contact the storeowner for information about rental rates, utilities, etc. If you plan on opening in a mall, you will be dealing with Mall Management. Generally the information we have given you earlier about Kiosks applies to gift shops, with a few exceptions. The fee structure will be different, and there will be a bit more freedom from the strict rules set up for kiosk dealers.

MERCHANDISE AND VISUAL CONCEPTS

You have much greater freedom in choosing the merchandise you’ll be offering for sale at a gift store than you would a kiosk. Because of display and storage space limitations, kiosks generally mean you’ll be dealing in smaller items. A gift shop offers you the choice of stocking larger items in greater quantities. Storage space is also a plus for the gift shop proprietor.

ADVERTISING

Advertising a gift shop will be approached from a different angle than from that of the kiosk proprietor unless you are operating your gift shop inside a mall. Malls have distinct rules about advertising on the premises and the Mall Management office will explain those.

If your gift shop is not in a mall, or if it is and you wish to advertise apart from the mall, you may use everything from flyers to ads in newspapers and on radio (or even television) to mailing lists. Investigate these thoroughly to find out the general return (buying customers) you will get for the money you spend.

Note: You usually cannot distribute flyers inside or outside a mall. You can, however, distribute flyers inside your mall shop to your customers.

Many forms of advertising can be expensive and some offer little return for your money. This is another case of doing your homework. Find out what other businesspeople near you have been doing and how successful they have been.

RENT AND FEES

Gift shop sites can be leased as a temporary tenant (month to month) or leased for a year or more. Length of lease will depend on the agreement you and the landlord decide upon.

If this is your first gift shop experience, a temporary tenant situation might be the best option. This gives you a little breathing room so that you can get your feet wet in the business, see if you like it, see how successful the location is and have the option to change anything that is not working for you without being stuck in a long-term lease.

Drawback: Being a temporary tenant means the landlord can ask you to vacate, usually upon 30 days notice. On one occasion a gift shop owner was doing well and making money but was asked to move when the landlord wanted another tenant in the space.

In general the fees for a stand-alone gift shop (a shop not in a mall) will include:

1. Base lease price

2. Utilities (mayor may not include telephone)

3. Security deposit

If you plan on hiring outside help, you will need to budget in the costs of employee wages and any benefits you might wish to offer.

Note: If you are leasing space in a mall, don’t assume the Mall Management won’t negotiate with you. Spaces that have been vacant for a while may be great candidates for negotiation.

INSURANCE

Insurance is a necessity in to day’s business world, and your local insurance carriers will give you information on both general liability insurance and property damage insurance and the rates available for both.

If you plan on hiring outside employees, you will need to inquire at your State Offices for Worker’s Comp Insurance rules and explanations of how they apply to your business.

CREDIT CARDS

It is strongly advised that you have the ability to accept credit cards whether your are selling from a kiosk or from your own shop. This will entail contacting a company that supplies the needed electronic equipment and hook-ups. The company will charge you a fee for the service and this fee, including deposits on equipment, will need to be added into your budget.

GET READY, GET SET, SELL!

All of the previous information may seem like a lot to deal with, but most of the above is a one-time energy expenditure. After the initial securing of the Kiosk or Gift Shop space, the details of running your business will revolve around ordering and restocking inventory, keeping records and making weekly work schedules.

It is at this point that the fun … and profit … of being a shop owner begins.

Now is the time to enjoy yourself by interacting with your customers. Talk to them and track their reactions to your quality products and choose and stock items that are great sellers. You’ll learn this technique quickly.

Sales can be a fun and rewarding experience … and a profitable one too! Get into the swing. Enjoy yourself and … sell, sell, sell!
